Day one after surgery, they had me standing.

Day one after surgery, they had me standing.

Summer shares her recovery journey after cardiac surgery and the care she received from our team.

When Everyday Movement Became a Challenge

For years, I had always been independent. After retiring from teaching, I enjoyed having the freedom to go shopping, meet friends, take care of things around the house, and spend time with my family.

But as the pain gradually became worse, even ordinary activities started to feel difficult. Walking for longer distances became uncomfortable, stairs were something I tried to avoid, and I found myself planning my day around how much I thought I could manage physically.

Eventually, I realized I was giving up more and more of the things I enjoyed. That was when I decided it was time to seek help.

Rehabilitation: Progress Built One Step at a Time

Surgery felt like a big decision, especially at my age. My biggest concern wasn’t only the procedure itself—I worried about what life would look like afterward.
Would I be able to walk normally again? How long would I need someone to help me? Would I ever feel confident going out on my own?

During my consultation, the medical team took the time to explain my condition, the treatment options available, and what I could realistically expect during recovery. Having a clear understanding of the process made the decision feel much less frightening. Instead of simply focusing on the surgery, we talked about my goal: getting back to living independently.

Being able to do things for myself again might sound simple, but to me, it feels like getting a part of my life back.
